Bowls Notes for 26th and 29th June 2024

Wednesday 26th

We gave Green #4 some exercise after a long break. Once again, we had cool wintery conditions that saw 24 players sign up for four games of Triples over eighteen ends.

Game 1, rink 16.

Norm Hayes, Ian Cunningham and Daniel Sealy got away to a good start over Kathy Evans, Joe Young and Marg Miller by having eight shots on the board after four ends. From there they were always in control particularly closing with a strong finishing burst  of twelve shots in five ends. The final score: 30-7.

Game 2, rink 17.

John Bolwell and his crew of Trevor Kellock and Scotty Bennet were down 8-3 after six ends against Peter Drew, Paul Rodenhuis and Robert Keady.  They then combined well to take the next seven ends and twelve shots to lead 15-8 after thirteen ends. Scoring seven shots to four in the last five ends saw the final score of 22-12.

Game 3, rink 18.

Bobby Bourke with Mick Hope and Annette McPherson defeated the team of Kevin Miller, Phill Murray and Annette Myers  with a score of 18-8. Bobby’s team lost the first end but had a run of six winning ends to lead 8-2 after nine ends.  From there they pressed the advantage, winning nine shots to six.

Game 4, rink 19.

Ian Shaw, John McDonagh and Bruce Rich had a good win over Denis Oxley, Jack Smith and John Martin (welcome back to the rinks, John!). Coming from one-down after four ends, Ian’s team led 9-4 after the seventh end. Denis and Co put on six in the next two ends thus leading 10-9. From there, Ian’s team steadily drew ahead to end up winners on 25-16.

Saturday 29th

Another cool day with gusty crosswind, played  again on Green #4.

Game 1 rink 16.

A close game resulted when Joe Young, John Bolwell and Grant Brunton met Paul Rodenhuis, Mick Hope and Bruce Rich.  Paul’s team led 7-1 after four ends but by the eighth end the score was 8-all. Joe’s team took the lead for the next four ends when Paul’s crew levelled on 12-all after thirteen ends.  Again, scores were equal 13-all after fifteen ends. Going into the 18th, Joes team had one shot lead. Paul’s team were holding three for the win until Joe knocked one in to take the game 16-14.

Game 2, rink 17.

A game of Pairs saw Bobby Bourke and Chris Stafford beat Norm Hayes and John McDonagh. Bobby and Chris were always in front; Norm and John came good in the end, but the result was a win for Bobby and Chris 19-14.

Game 3, rink 18.

With an odd number of players entered, Anthony Morrissey played swinger for Denis Oxley and Paul Reece against Nev Townsend and Jack Smith.  After ten ends, Denis’ side led 9-7; they then had a great run of  seven ends including a SEVEN to lead 25-7 after seventeen ends. Nev’s team took a two to finish the game on 25-9.

Game 4, rink 19.

Ian Shaw, Merle Stevens and Robert Keady beat Trevor Kellock, Ian Schofield and David Beale 25-20.  Ian’s team started very well by leading 12-nil after five ends. Trevor’s team came back with a 6, 2, 3 to be only one shot down. From being down 21-15 after fourteen ends, Trevor’s team came back to 21-19  with two ends to go.  Ian’s team won the next with four shots; Trevor’s side took the last end with one shot, so the game ended on 25-20.
