Jim’s Bowls Notes to 3rd February 2024
Wednesday, 31st January, 2024.
As today is the last day of January and it has been a great month for playing Lawn Bowls at the Greens on William. The weather has been really very hot on Summer’s day in Bathurst.

Today, Twenty – four bowlers formed 2 Games of Social Triples and our ” A ” Grade bowlers contested 3 Games of Social Pairs on another very hot Summer’s afternoon.
Our only visitor to play today was our ” A ” Champion of yesteryears, Phillip Gray, who now resides in Queensland.
Game No. 1:
By scoring a great 6 shots on the 6th end, Skip. Kathy Evans, Ian Cunninghame and Margaret Miller led 9 shots to 3 shots over Skip. Paul Rodenhuis, Jack Smith and Annette McPherson, who scored 13 shots to One shot to lead 16 shots to 10 shots after the14th end. Then, Team Evans scored 10 shots to 3 shots to be successful winning 20 Shots to 19 shots after the 21st end over Team Rodenhuis, in a great game of Lawn Bowls at the City.
Game No. 2:
After scoring a great 6 shots on the 1st end, Skip. Joe Young, Phillip Murray and Scott Bennett, then just led Skip. Daniel Prasad, Paul Rapley and Barry McPherson 9 shots to 8 shots after the 8th end. Team Young by scoring 8 shots to 3 shots were comfortably leading 17 shots to 11 shots after the 17th end against Team Prasad, who finished brilliantly scoring 13 shots to nil, to be victorious 24 shots to 17 shots over Team Young after the 21st end.
Game No. 3:
In this game the scores were level on 3 occasions, the 3rd, 5th and 7th ends, where the scores were 5 shots all. Skip. John Archer and Neville Townsend then led 13 shots to 10 shots after the 17th end over Skip. Phillip Gray and Garry Hotham, who finished the best scoring 8 shots to One shot to win 18 shots to 14 shots over John and Neville, after the 21st end.
Game No. 4:
On the 5th end, Skip. Michael Hall and Robert Lindsay scored One shot to level the scores at 5 shots all with Skip. Robert Bourke and Denis Oxley, who scored a great 6 shots on the 10th end to lead 14 shots to 6 shots. Skip. Michael and Robert L, then scored 8 shots to level the scores at 14 shots all after the 13th end and then both teams each scored 6 shots to level the scores at 20 shots all after the 17th end. Skip. Robert B. ( With his usual last ends scoring ” Flurry.”) and Denis scored 9 shots to win comfortably, 29 shots to 20 shots against Michael and Robert L. after the 21st end.
Game. N0. 5:
Skip. Ray Noonan and Kevin Miller just led 4 shots to 2 shots after the 5th end over Skip. Norm. Hayes and Peter Drew, who won the next 5 consecutive ends to lead 14 shots to 4 shots after the 10th end. Skip. Norm. and Peter, then were leading 18 shots to 11 shots after the 17th end. Both teams each scored 3 shots with Skip. Norm. and Peter were victorious 21 shots to 14 shots over Skip. Ray and Kevin, after the 21st end.
Saturday, 3rd February, 2024.
Our very hot afternoon did not deter our 24 City Bowlers and our regular Bowlers, Sue and Merle from the Majellan from playing 6 games of Lawn Bowls at the Greens on William, where 5 games of Social Pairs and One game of Social Triples were set down to be played in the hot conditions.
Game No 1:
With one Bowl to be played on the 2nd end, Skip. Denis Oxley, Margaret Miller and Flynn Armstrong were holding the potential of 7 shots against Skip. Norm. Hayes, Jim Grives and Michael Hope. With his usual quiet manner and great bowling skill, Norm’s bowl rested on the Kitty and Team Hayes scored One shot to level the scores at One shot each after the 2nd end. Then after the 8th end, Team Hayes led 7 shots to 2 shots over Team Oxley, who scored 10 shots to lead 12 shots to 7 shots after the 11th end. Finishing the best, Team Oxley scored 8 shots to 3 shots to be successful 20 shots to10 shots over Team Hayes, after the 21st end.
Game No. 2:
After the 3rd end, Skip. Kevin Miller and Merle Stephens were leading 3 shots to Nil against Skip. Neville Townsend and Phillip Murray, who then won the next 11 consecutive ends to lead 23 shots to 3 shots after the 14th end. Although scoring 9 shots to 8 shots, Kevin and Merle were comprehensively beaten by Neville and Phillip 31 shots to 12 shots after the 22nd end. ( Neville appears to thoroughly enjoy his Bowling as the Skip and one of our most consistent Lead Bowlers, Phillip is also enjoying and playing great Bowls.)
Game No. 3:
In another entertaining game, Skip. Ray Noonan and Sue Murray led 8 shots to 4 shots after the 5th end over Skip. Bryan Bromfield and Louise Hall, who scored 3 shots to level the scores at 12 shots all after the 10th end. Then by scoring 13 shots to 4 shots, Bryan and Louise comfortably defeated Ray and Sue, 25 shots to 16 shots after the 21st end.
Game No. 4:
This was another very even game as the scores were level on 4 occasions, 3rd, 5th, 8th and on the 11th end, where Skip. Chris. Stafford and Paul Rodenhuis scored 4 shots to level the scores at 10 shots all with Skip. Anthony Morrissey and Paul Rapley, who scored 3 shots to lead 14 shots to 12 shots after the 15th end. Then by winning the next 5 consecutive ends, Chris and Paul led 22 shots to 14 shots after the 20th end. By scoring 2 shots on the 21st end Anthony and Paul were defeated by Chris. and Paul 22 shots to 16 shots.
Game No. 5:
This was supposed to be “The Grudge Match of the Summer.” But unfortunately, Robert Bourke’s great Skip. Bruce ” Skipper ” Rich, was unwell and was replaced by Skip. Jack Smith, who may be the Senior Bowler of our great Bowling Club and he was a worthy replacement for Skipper Rich.
Beginning very well, Skip. Ian Schofield and Robert Lindsay were leading 10 shots to 2 shots after the 6th end over Skip.Jack Smith and Robert Bourke, who were just down 10 shots to 12 shots after the 12th end. Then Ian and Robert scored 7 shots to lead 19 shots to 10 shots after the 16th end. By winning the next 4 ends, Jack and Robert levelled the scores at 19 shots all on the 20th end. But, Ian and Robert L. scored 2 shots to win a great ” Grudge Match” by 21 shots to 19 shots over Jack and Robert B. Get well soon, Skipper Rich.
Game No. 6:
By scoring One shot on the 4th end, Skip.Michael Hall and John McDonagh levelled the scores at 2 shots all with Skip.Garry Hotham and Trevor Kellock, who scored 4 shots on the 10th end to level the scores at 10 shots all with Michael and John, who appeared to finish the better as they led 18 shots to 12 shots after the 17th end. But, Garry and Trevor scored 7 shots to One Shot and this great game was drawn level at 19 shots all after the 20th end. ( Our 2 Bowlers, John and Trevor had a great ” Tussle ” with their ” Golden Arms. ” )
